YOU ARE PAYING MORE FOR WHATSAPP LEADS AND IT IS YOUR FAULT

Learn how it is simple to change that

Hardly anyone today can imagine a world without social media. Just think about sending a message to someone without WhatsApp, for instance. Your phone does have SMS, of course, but that technology was essentially born destined for oblivion because it lacks a single owner.

The truth is that social media has carved out a space in people's lives that now encompasses everything from leisure to work. Yet, at the same time, these platforms create unnecessary problems and offer solutions that come at a high price—especially for businesses.

When you run a campaign to generate leads via WhatsApp, you pay not only for every lead generated but also—at a premium—for every unwanted lead. Meta doesn't care whether someone clicked because they wanted to buy, because they were an existing customer trying to reach the company, or simply by accident. Every lead generated—intentional or not—prompts Meta to target more users matching that profile, making the actual lead you want for sales increasingly expensive. In short, you are charged for every accidental click, and Meta responds by showing ads to that same audience even more frequently, further increasing the likelihood of unwanted leads.

Why does this happen? Technically, it’s because Meta sets the conversation itself as the conversion goal. That neat turn of phrase explains the loop: the objective is to generate conversation, and the more conversation generated, the more Meta perceives a successful conversion, thereby reinforcing the vicious cycle.

And why doesn't anyone complain? Because most agencies and clients—due to shortcomings in measurement—see only what Meta wants them to see: that the cost per generated lead has dropped. The lower the cost per conversation, the more investment is poured in, under the illusion that results will improve. But that doesn't happen; it often takes months to realize that the increased investment didn't translate into better sales—only more leads.

The gap in measurement here is usually significant: WhatsApp tools do not audit campaign leads, nor do they track them by default—this must be configured manually. Furthermore, many of these tools only identify the platform (Meta) without providing details on the specific media source or campaign. These glaring errors don't happen by accident: Meta isn't obligated to know exactly what kind of lead you want, nor would it have a reason to build a radically different mechanism. In fact, drawing on Google's experience, it could establish the conversation as an intermediate step toward a final goal—such as a purchase. It could then focus on leads that generate sales or, more simply, create a feedback mechanism.

Here’s a piece of information many people overlook: that mechanism actually exists, though it isn't accessible directly through the Meta platform itself—only via the API. In other words, you can develop a lead management system that informs Meta which leads matter (ensuring it only receives qualified ones) while also auditing what was actually sent versus what your WhatsApp tool reported.

By doing this, you teach the algorithm to seek out more of what you actually want. You can establish qualification parameters that go beyond a simple "customer vs. non-customer" distinction, incorporating other aspects and even actual sales outcomes. That is how you pay less and less while achieving better results.

This illustrates just how complex the current measurement process is. The more channels, campaigns, ads, and contact points you offer, the more fragmented your performance feedback becomes. Simply increasing your budget won't help, as it only compounds the distortion. You need to take each stage of the acquisition funnel and optimize it, minimizing wasted spend.

AI is making this effort increasingly manageable. In the past, building a system like the one I described would have required a developer for the code, an API specialist, and a database expert. I’m talking about the reality just three or four years ago. Today, you simply need to choose the right AI—as I did—and know how to use it. Of course, it’s not quite that simple: beyond using the AI, you need to understand Meta’s API authorization systems, Webhooks, Google Cloud, and WhatsApp workflows. However, the right AI can answer your questions or guide you on the best way to execute the process. The truth is that, while it has never been easier to create mechanisms for tracking results, what needs to be measured has never been more complex. Nowadays, any piece of data has multiple dimensions that must be understood for it to be measured correctly. If you dislike the idea of sinking money into a bottomless pit and have no intention of doing so, it is crucial to understand where the virtual drain siphoning off your investments is located.
