The Importance of Ethics (A importância da Ética)

What is Ethics? How do we know if something is Ethical? I'm convinced that if we ask this to 100 people, especially Brazilians, I guarantee we'll get all kinds of answers. And, with very rare exceptions, wrong ones.

I've been trying to understand what happens here for years, and since I'm not an expert in behavioral analysis, I have to narrow my hypotheses to what I can observe. And the first observation is: Ethics isn't taught in schools. It doesn't matter what name the schools give it, but Ethics, with a capital E, isn't taught.

The second hypothesis is more controversial, but simple: Brazilians are individualistic and believe that laws and principles can be adapted to their convictions. I see this in all social spheres. People think everything is a matter of paying the price or not.

Dry driving laws? Fine, just don't get caught. Lying to win a labor lawsuit? Fine, just get witnesses. Tax evasion? Fine, the government is corrupt. Speeding? It's just a matter of knowing where the radars are.

In a country where the law "sticks" or not, as if that made any sense, we're all too accustomed to being "tolerant" of mistakes. But is it tolerance or the feeling that it's easier to be like everyone else? Every time we bend the truth to our advantage, we are, at the very least, committing a lack of ethics. But this minimum can become a crime. The more "tolerant" we are of deviations, the closer we are to barbarism. Or rather, we were. Because just look at any company, public or private, government agencies, etc., starting with the judiciary, and we'll realize that the law has become nothing more than a bibliography of bizarre decisions.

Returning to the question of ethics, even the definition of the term seems outdated and inconceivable to me today. In the past, when people had their own cultures and isolation was the norm, we could say that ethics is a "set of rules and precepts of a value-based and moral order of an individual, a social group, or a society," as Google puts it.

I affirm: no, it isn't. When we do business internationally, either there is universal ethics or we have no rules. Ethics, for me, is what is right and should be done even when no one is watching. Unfortunately, this concept only applied when people were afraid of God, and even then, each faith prophesied a different interpretation of what God would judge as right or wrong.

Ethics should differentiate us from other animals, who cannot read or write and have not left thousands of years of history for new generations to learn. In the animal kingdom, the law of survival is accepted. In the globalized human world, which seeks global well-being, ethics are quite objective, and if it concerns a group of people, let it be the world's population. This is what will prevent us from continuing to destroy each other and the planet. Forget global warming, wars, military power, recession. All the ills on the planet are symptoms, but the cause is one: a total lack of ethics.

O que é Ética? Como sabemos se alguma coisa é Ética? Tenho a convicção que, se perguntarmos isso para 100 pessoas, especialmente, brasileiros, garanto que vamos obter respostas de todo tipo. E, com raríssimas exceções, erradas.
Tento entender há anos o que acontece por aqui e, como não sou especialista em análise comportamental, tenho que reduzir minhas hipóteses ao que posso observar. E a primeira observação é: não se ensina Ética nas escolas. Não interessa que nome as escolas dêem, mas Ética, com caixa alta no E não é ensinada.
A segunda hipótese é mais controversa, mas simples: o brasileiro é individualista e acredita que as leis e princípios podem ser adaptados à sua convicção. Vejo isso em todas as esferas sociais. As pessoas acham que tudo é uma questão de pagar o preço ou não.
Lei Seca no trânsito? Tudo bem, é só não ser pego. Mentira para ganhar uma ação trabalhista? Tudo bem, é só conseguir testemunhas. Sonegar impostos? Tudo bem, o governo é corrupto. Velocidade acima da permitida? É só saber onde estão os radares.
Num país ou onde a lei "pega" ou não, como se isso fizesse algum sentido, estamos acostumados demais a sermos "tolerantes" com os erros. Mas será tolerância ou a sensação que é mais fácil ser igual todo mundo? Toda vez que dobramos a verdade a nosso favor, estamos, no mínimo, incorrendo em falta de Ética. Só que esse mínimo pode virar crime. Quanto mais "tolerantes" com os desvios, mais próximos da barbárie. Ou melhor, estávamos. Porque é só olhar qualquer empresa, pública ou privada, órgãos do governo etc, a começar pelo judiciário, que vamos perceber que a lei virou apenas bibliografia de decisões bizarras.
Voltando à questão da Ética, até a definição do termo me parece ultrapassada e inconcebível atualmente. No passado, onde os povos tinham suas próprias culturas e o isolamento era o normal, podemos dizer que Ética é um "conjunto de regras e preceitos de ordem valorativa e moral de um indivíduo, de um grupo social ou de uma sociedade", como diz o Google.
Eu afirmo: não, não é. Quando fazemos negócios internacionalmente, ou existe uma Ética universal ou não temos regras. Ética, para mim, é o que é certo e deve ser feito ainda que ninguém esteja olhando. Infelizmente, esse conceito valia apenas para quando as pessoas tinham medo de Deus e, mesmo nessa época, cada fé profetizava uma leitura diferente do que Deus julgaria correto ou não.
A Ética deveria nos diferenciar dos demais animais, que não sabem ler e nem escrever e não deixaram milhares de anos de história para as novas gerações aprenderem. No reino animal é aceita a lei da sobrevivência. No mundo humano, globalizado, que busca o bem-estar mundial, Ética é bem objetiva e, se for de um grupo de pessoas, que seja a população mundial. Isso é o que vai nos impedir de continuar a destruirmos uns aos outros e ao planeta. Esqueça aquecimento, guerras, poder militar, recessão. Todos os males do planeta são sintomas, mas a causa é uma só: total falta de Ética.
